DO YOU ‘KNOW’ FUENGIROLA?

WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW IT BETTER?

Fuengirola Revisited is a new and exciting book that pieces together forgotten and newly discovered stories with fresh insight to tell this story for the first time in English.

Today Fuengirola is a great place to visit, or to live in, but that is not new, people have been passing this way for a long time.  Look at this cover picture, an Artist’s impression of how the town would have looked between five and ten thousand years ago.  The long beach, rivers, pastures, protective mountains, even spaces for a Castle and Watchtowers in a world that would need them. At the end of the last Ice Age, the shoreline rose and the land and bay were ready for hunter-gatherers to become settled pastoralists.

In the age of Empires, like a precious jewel, it passed from the Phoenicians, Romans, Vandals, Visigoths and Moors until the Castilians brought the new Spain.  The ownership, name, border, culture, race and religion changed, while this ideal location would be home to whoever could make it productive and defend it.

In this revisitation, we see how the settlers, empires, invaders, pirates, competing faiths and political persuasions all weave a rich historical tapestry upon this ideal location.   We take a journey through the rise and fall of the great civilisations, to the external events and inventions which created the modern town of today.

Fuengirola Revisited is written by Patrick H. Meehan, a social anthropologist and twenty-year resident of Fuengirola, combining local research with a fresh analysis to tell this tale for the first time in English.
